Many of you here will have played in one or more of the 'Battle of the Boards' pick 'em competitions that are held on the britishtennis.net site for slams and most AMS events. For those who haven't yet, it's a bit like the ATP bracket challenge, but with hundreds of entrants rather than thousands, it's friendlier and has the extra 'edge' of it being possible to play for a team if you want to as well as taking part in the individual competition. It's a great way to get interested in matches you'd never have cared about before and to develop a better knowledge of the players on the ATP tour.

From the Roland Garros pick 'em onwards, we are thinking of offering people the chance to choose JamieMurray.org as their team. While this will probably mean that the AM.com team gets split, there are some advantages to this if it ends up meaning that the biggest teams are all of a similar size. However, it will be pointless to offer this option if JM.org would then struggle to get a team of five or more for some of the comps.

So, before we make a final decision, please could you post here if you would be likely to choose to play pick 'ems for JamieMurray.org if you had the option to do so? If it looks like a dozen or more of you would do that, we'll run with it!

More advance information about the Roland Garros pick 'em can be found at http://www.andymurray.com/forum/showthread.php?t=657 while the pick 'em home page can be found at the first link in my signature.

Maybe we have the team linked together as the members on here are nearly from Andys site.

Um ... that's not quite the point, Shaun! :wink:

Fitzy

I'd do it for all the non slams but I want to try and revive the MKT team at RG. :rolling:

steven
11-05-2008, 04:50 PM
Oh, does that mean I need to put MK back on the list? (I've just taken it off LOL)

Fitzy
11-05-2008, 05:44 PM
Oops :shamed: Is there anyway you can just put it on for RG and if we don't get enough entrants, we won't try and enter again?

Michael
11-05-2008, 06:25 PM
Steven do you want open another team in the name of jamiemurray.org

steven
12-05-2008, 06:22 AM
Yes, that's fine Fitzy.

Michael - if enough people want to play for it, yes.

JAMES4579

Well, I didn't help am.com much the last time, so I might consider entering for someone else at the French. There's no doubles pick'em mind you.:)

steven
18-05-2008, 05:57 AM
Let's make this easier - I've added JM.org to the list of teams on the entry form. If you'd like to play for it if enough other people do too, just pick that as your 1st choice and AM.com as your 2nd and then you'll be switched back to AM.com if the JM.org team isn't big enough.

Hey everyone - Roland Garros is only a few days away...........

I'm happy to enter (there will be a massive sigh of relief from am.com!!!) but please bear in mind my Pick'em record is probably .......... a record.!!!
I think I'm up to 4 last places so - just say if you'd rather I scuppered t'other team... :shades:

Anyway ..... this is about the only time Jamie could beat Andy in a Singles competition now.

So - who is going to join me in the JamieMurray Pick'em team???

(oh, and we are going to make sure MarkKnowlesTennis comes last.......... :yahoo:)

Fitzy
22-05-2008, 09:57 PM
hey hey, be careful what you say, because if my team doesn't have enough people to play, then I'll be heading your way, in which case the team will sadly pay, for my crazy picks, which I'll make on the last day! :p

yes, no doubles pick'em. that is a sad thing.

steven
23-05-2008, 09:43 AM
Unfortunately, there are only 24 hours in a day so I won't be running any doubles pick 'ems any time soon, but if anyone wants to set up a doubles pick 'em themselves, why not have a go - you can always start off small and doing it manually like we did with the singles and then think about expanding it later.

Entries are now open properly, see the link in my signature.

No way would we expect you to have that much time! It's obvious it takes a lot of time, I wish I had that kind of time! I would definitely do it! But alas, 21 credits plus work doesn't leave much time for anything else. If anyone wants to I might have time around Wimbledon to do one there!

(Or crazy as I am if I was pushed I might try it here)

Maybe we should start a thread to see if anyone would be interested in a doubles pick'em?

UPDATE (being pasted into all boards with more than 5 entrants so far so apologies for the lack of formatting!)

Many thanks to those of you who have already entered. I am writing to confirm that the following changes to the draw have been made as a result of player withdrawals today:

Tsonga has been replaced by (LL) Luis Horna (PER), who will play Scoville Jenkins (USA) in R1
Fognini has been replaced by (LL) Josselin Ouanna (FRA), who will play Juan Martin del Potro (ARG) in R1
Kiefer has been replaced by (LL) Marc Lopez (ESP) who will play (26) Jarkko Nieminen (FIN) in R1

Anyone who started their entry after about 18.10 GMT today will have used an entry form with these changes already made.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY ENTERED

Don't worry, it is definitely NOT essential to enter again - if you don't change your entry, you will simply score points if Horna wins any matches you predicted that Tsonga would win, and so on. None of the withdrawals so far are likely to affect many of you that much.

However, if you do want to make changes, please do a full new entry at http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html if at all possible (this will only take a minute or two if you printed your original entry and can transfer the picks off that) and put NEW in after your name so that we know the entry is a replacement.

Although it says on the 'entry successful' page that minor changes can be made by email, it will take us a lot longer to start doing results if we are swamped with email changes, so we'd much rather you didn't do it that way unless you have no other option, e.g. if you weren't able to print your original entry and can't remember your other picks. If that was the case, we'll try to process any emailed changes. Changes by PM on this board will probably NOT get picked up, so please don't do it that way, whatever you do.

LATER CHANGES

If there are any even later changes between now and when play starts, I probably won't have time to come around the boards again, but if you notice any and want to make any further changes to your entry, please follow the advice above. Nobody will be able to make changes after play starts.

25-05-2008, 10:47 AM
Hi Guys, you've managed to get a team of 13 together, bravo. :)

There should be some debate between the RoastLamb family too Sally as they've split teams. It could get messy :wink:

At the close of entries teams look like this:

41 = 11% AM AndyMurray.com
38 = 6% TN Tennisopolis.com
36 = 11% TA TalkAboutTennis.com (new team)
32 = 11% RF RogerFederer.com
32 = 9% IN Individuals (no team)
28 = 8% BT BritishTennis.net
26 = 11% CC CentreCourtHavoc
21 = 5% MT MensTennisForums
17 = 7% TY Tennis4you.com
14 = 5% AR AndyRoddick.com
13 = 3% JM JamieMurray.org (new team)
12 = 5% RG RichardGasquet.net
12 = 4% GR Rusedski.co.uk
5 = 2% ND Novak-Djokovic.com (new team)
----------------------------------------------
3 = 1% SG Stevegtennis.com
2 = 1% TW TennisWarehouse (new team)
1 = 0% TM Tennis.com (new team)
1 = 0% BZ BritishTennisZone
1 = 0% RN RafaelNadal.com
0 = 0% BB BBC boards
0 = 0% MK MarkKnowlesTennis
0 = 0% LT The LTA
0 = 0% VB VamosBrigade.com

that's not the 100% final table as there are a couple of issues still to sort out but it's pretty accurate. :)

Getting the results up will probably take until the end of the day today as it normally takes a good 3 hours and we're having a few problems on top of that. In the meantime, enjoy the tennis!!

Sallydaisy
25-05-2008, 10:53 AM
Thanks Imoen :thumbup:

BTW - bearing in mind you've already got a busy day - that percentage alongside Tennispolis looks wrong.
Should it be 11%???

Also - are there some Independents as well lurking somewhere?

Have a good day... :shades: At least it's miserable and raining so you won't feel you're missing a day in the sun!

imoen
25-05-2008, 11:00 AM
oops guess which numpty forgot to change the %s after copying and pasting. Please ignore all %s!!

The independents are the 4th one down, all 32 of 'em.

Um, it's lovely fluffy white clouds and sunshine here! (with quite a strong wind to be fair but still not miserable or raining. Where are you? - I'm York, we have our own little weather system, the surrounding area could be having a thunderstorm on a day of brilliant sunshine here :smile:)

Question before joining the pick'em team.

Is it useful to have more people on the team even if they're not going to contribute many points? I guess I'm asking if the team's performance is rated on an absolute value or the average per team member.

I ask because I've never done pick'em & doubt that I'd earn many points for correct predictions.

Fitzy
21-06-2008, 11:53 AM
The more the merrier right? ;)

We don't care about our team finish. We like having fun making predictions w/o having to worry about people getting mad if we aren't pulling our weight. Jamie's forum is the perfect place to start as a new member, because chances are, you'll do better than some of us veterans who never finish near the top! :D

Sallydaisy
21-06-2008, 11:59 AM

We seem to have a team of 5 now.

Make that 6 Michael :thumbup:

So I've decided to take the plunge and break my pick-em duck!

I must confess I've deliberately avoided the pick-em thread since joining the site because it just scared me.:eek:
I was always too late to enter anyway and couldn't figure out how to send in my choices since the entry form had always disappeared by the time I'd checked the site but I remembered this time and, well it's not difficult is it! (although making the right picks probably is!)

So I thought I'd enter for JM.org since I originally found Andy's site after looking for info about Jamie,
plus how could I not enter on the side of a current Wimbledon Champion?:swingin:
(also less people to get annoyed with me for picking muppets!)

JAMES4579

I thought I'd take a risk and in my stupidity also had Nole in the final, when Federer has been perhaps been more impressive than some of us were considering. Anyway had a really bad performance after a good first day, so I'm not helping!

janeInScotland
25-06-2008, 11:02 PM
I think most of us and the rest of the 400+ doing pick 'em had Nole into at least the semi-final. There'll only be a few who benefit from his defeat, and their predictions for the next few rounds must vary a lot - so hopefully no bias-drag-down for the JM team.

Looking at the Team KO thing (I don't remember entering that - was there a "Dream number" box on the entry form or something?!) -it looks like we've beaten Hewitt's lot and now take on the mighty AM.com!

JM.org was 6th in the Wimbly pick 'em & either 5th or 6th in the KO (sorry I can't work it out - from the KO list I 'd say 6th but from the to-date list I'd say 5th).

To date we're 12th (up 1). So lots of potential for us :clap:

We've only got 4 scores (of possible 9) & if we had another 5 at same rate we'd be 7th.

(You probably all know all of this, that but I thought it should be recorded here :))

Steven - thanks to you & rest of team for all your hard work. I must say the pick 'em form was one of the simplest & most responsive of all the on-line forms I've completed :)

I thought it would be useful to havea copy of this here (from andy's site)US OPEN PICK 'EM - FACTSHEET

The US Open pick 'em will get under way in just over a week's time.

IMPORTANT DATES

The approximate timetable for the US Open pick 'em is:

Mon. 18 Aug 00.00 GMT (1 a.m. UK) - entries open for those who need to enter early with semi-'blind' picks - see the end of this post (*)

Thu. 21 Aug 22.00 GMT (11 pm UK) - main draw takes place

Fri. 22 Aug by early morning (UK) - main draw available on the entry form

Sat. 23 Aug by early morning (UK) - qualifiers placed in the draw on the entry form (unless the end of qualifying is delayed by rain)

Mon. 25 Aug 15.00 GMT (4 pm UK / 11 am US Eastern) - entries close

Emails appropriate to the notification option selected by past entrants will be sent out at the relevant time to those who have asked for them.

(*) ENTERING EARLY WITH 'BLIND' PICKS

If you are interested in your overall pick 'em ranking, it is fairly vital to take part in the slam pick 'ems, since you can count your ranking point score from each slam pick 'em up to two times, so the entry form is already available at http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html.

If you will be unable to enter after the main draw comes out, please feel free to fill in the entry form early to ensure that you get some ranking points from Wimbledon. If you do this, you will know where Fed & Rafa will be in the draw (assuming they both play) and which other slots will contain seeds, but otherwise you will be picking 'blind'.

So, please don't enter now unless you know that you will not have Internet access between Friday 25 morning and Monday 28 early afternoon UK. However, in that case picking virtually blind now might be better than nothing - at least you will have a pick 'em interest in some of the matches when you get back and a chance to score some ranking points - as far as your overall ranking is concerned, the worst your entry can do is become one of your non-counting scores, so there is nothing to lose by entering.

N.B. If you want to enter like this, please choose the team you would normally play for so that can be used for overall ranking purposes, but you will appear as an Independent on the US Open tables and, for this event only, your score will not count towards a team, though you should still select your usual team on the entry form.

Hi, tennis queen and welcome to the site! I'm pretty new to the Pick'ems too. If you just follow the link to britishtennis.net/competitions (http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html) you can see everyone's individual and team results by following the relevant links. It's too late to enter for the US Open, but you could join in for the next Pick'em, which will be the next Masters tournament. You just fill in the entry form by deciding which player you think will win each match. It's really straightforward and is loads of fun!

Just thought I'd note what's happening, half-way through the semi-finals.

Team JM is 10th of 13 (team AM is 3rd).

I won't comment on the KO as I'm not sure if we are 15th or 16th & I don't know how there are 16 there and only 13 in the list. :confused:

Of our 14 members I'm top - but about to go down as I had Nole to win. The next 3 (Jambondusoleil, jm-fan & SarahEva) all have Rafa .... who knows?
Then come kayce (Nole), Claire Morris (Rafa), NorthernLights (Andy), Michael (Rafa), KatieK & esther (Fed), JAMES4578 & Fitz (Nole), sallydaisy (Fed) and LadyTigress (Rafa).

JAMES4579

Just a reminder that the pick'em for Paris (http://www.britishtennis.net/competitions.html) closes at 13.30 GMT = 1.30 pm UK on Sunday. Below is a copy of Steven's post on Andy's site.

PARIS AMS 'BATTLE OF THE BOARDS' PICK 'EM

The main draw for Paris AMS took place earlier today and the entry form for the Paris AMS pick 'em is now available via http://www.britishtennis.net/competitions.html

DEADLINE

The main draw starts on Sunday afternoon. Taking into account this and the fact that the clocks go back on Sunday morning in Europe but NOT in North America, entries will close at 13.30 GMT = 1.30 pm UK = 14.30 CET = 9.30 am US EDT on SUNDAY.

MATCHES INVOLVING QUALIFIERS As for Madrid, qualifying does not finish until after the main draw starts, so everyone will have to pick matches involving qualifiers without knowing who each qualifier is - which means most of the top quarter in R1, since 5 of the 6 qualifiers will end up there!

All you can do for these matches is decide whether you would expect the other player in the match to beat a random qualifier, though there is also a Q v Q match in R1 this time, so I hope you're feeling lucky. :wink:

PARIS AMS - ALWAYS A BIT OF A LOTTERY TO PREDICT and this year probably won't be an exception!
You may be interested to know that after pulling out of St Petersburg with a wrist injury, Kolya Davydenko said: "I'm flying to Germany tomorrow to have a few days' rest. I'll try to play in Paris if I can," he said. "I'd like to start my first match there on Wednesday at the earliest but if they say I have to play on Tuesday, then I would have to withdraw."

As if he could tell back then whether Tuesday or Wednesday would make difference, eh? Add to that the fact that he has already qualified for TMC and you'll have to decide for yourselves how much credence to put in that. What's the betting he either pulls out in R1 or wins the tournament (it'll be whichever option we haven't chosen, naturally!)

Of course, the top four have already qualified for TMC as well and one or two of them might be wanting to conserve energy for it, so expect your picks to mess you around at every opportunity and you won't get too disappointed. :wink:

RACE FOR YEAR-END NO. 1 There could be quite a battle for year-end pick 'em no. 1 here if those in contention do a bit (ok, a lot!) better than they did in Madrid!

ATP BC If you enter the ATP Bracket Challenge as well, please note that entries for that close an hour earlier - they seem to think the clocks in North America change this Sunday too, but I'm sure they don't change there until the weekend after!

GOOD LUCK! (you'll probably need it ...) :wink:

janeInScotland
31-10-2008, 11:12 PM
We've gone up to 10th, swapping places with am.com who are now bottom.

5 of them and 4 of us have one SF player. 3 of them have Tsonga as RU, whereas their other 2 and our 4 don't have the semi-finalist progressing to the final (we had 3 Tsonga, 1 Blake). Our 4 with a SF are Fitz, Jambondusoleil, James4578 and jm-fan.

Fitz is now our highest placed at 21st, Jambondusoleil is 35th and KatieK 45th.

I fear we can only go down - it rather depends on Tsonga.

Full update at http://andymurray.com/forum/showthread.php?p=127249#post127249 and, of course at 'Battle of the Boards' Pick 'em Competitions (http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html) .

We've slipped to bottom - and I don't think there's any way this will change.

Fitz, Jambondusoleil, KatieK all slipped down 7 places. The rest of us either stayed the same or slipped down 1 to 4 places.

Linda
01-11-2008, 08:01 PM
No, it can't change now. Only 3 people picked Tsonga or Nalbandian to win, the lowest of those is at 35 and none of them are in jm.com.

AUS OPEN 2009 'BATTLE OF THE BOARDS' PICK 'EM

Still not quite sure where the time to do this is going to magically appear from, but we'll manage it somehow :smile: - this is just a reminder that entries for this competition will open on Friday sometime after the main draw comes out. Qualifiers are likely to be placed by early afternoon on Saturday and entries will close at 23.30 GMT on Sunday.

Entries will be capped at 500 (auto entry for the top 250 in the rankings, first come first served for the rest) and there's an outside chance we might actually have to apply that cap this time.

Main URL: http://www.britishtennis.net/Competitions.html (with apologies to LT! :wink:)

At the AO, "Novak" ASE from AM.com will be defending his AO pick 'em title (see http://www.britishtennis.net/pickem/2008ao.htm?n=1), MensTennisForums the 'Battle of the Boards' teams league title, BT.net the team KO title and Rafa "Wendy" Nadal from AM.com and Centre Court Forum will be trying to hold onto the world no. 1 individual and team positions that they held at the end of last year - http://www.britishtennis.net/pickem/ranking.htm?n=1

Given the long gap since the last pick 'em, there are probably quite a few newbies on this forum who will have no idea what I'm talking about - would anyone like to give them an idea of why it's fun to take part? :smile:

- good luck to our team JamieMurray.org. We were 9th last year - but I think a lot of us only started during the year and so didn't even have 7 tournaments (the 7 best count).

It's a lot easier, Pat, if you do the ATP comp as well - that lets you hover over a player & see his ranking, ytd win/loss etc - and you can see H2H for the 2 players. Once you've done that (and you can quickly choose the higher ranked player where you don't have a favourite) - its easy to copy into the pick 'em.

Not a very glorious start to my Wimbledon Pick'em. I think I'm doomed!

I see Minnie Me's heading the jm.org rankings - again! Clearly she going to have a sparkling career as a tennis pundit - Sue Barker should be up for retirement at just the right time. I wouldn't worry about putting money aside for your pension, HFW, you'll be living in the lap of luxury by then! :wink:

Our top player after yesterday is LindaB who shot up 35 places to 28th in the individual table so well done to her.

I'm afraid I had Roddick going through to the Final so his Round 3 loss on Saturday ensures I'm bringing up the rear.

Here's the full jm.org individual placings...........I've added in the robots so we can see just how helpful, or not, following their pick's could be.

5 Roberta the Robot made her picks assuming that the higher-ranked player (as at the entry closing time) would win every match
23 Ceres - at the US Open, Ceres picks like Roberta but based on the results of the US Open Series
28 lindab 28
60 Racy Racy - picked like Roberta but used the notional ATP Race rankings
67 jm.fan 67
78 JIS
84 Minnie Me (erm........ her Mum, Hfwardhouse, is at 138)
90 Average Joe - picked the player picked by the most entrants to win each match
107 Billy the Bookie - so we can see how good they are

thanks Sally

I see that: 8 of us have winner = Rafa
2 of us have winner = Potty
2 of us had.. winner = A-Rod
1 of us has.. winner = Nole

PS I'm going off this "indent" tool - it adds too many blank lines

I'm sorry guys - the one time I pick Roddick to win a tournament, is the one time he incurs a bad injury in his first match. :cry:

JM.org might finish top of the table....................
:)

According to Steven this is how.
JM will win with GR 2nd & BT 3rd if Rafa reaches the Final as long as he doesn't lose it to Nole.So, that means we need Rafa to win tomorrow and Davy to beat Nole.
:shades:

janeInScotland
16-10-2009, 09:06 PM
would be be okay if Rafa won the final beating Nole?

Sallydaisy
16-10-2009, 09:13 PM
As I understand it we need Rafa to be in the Final.
If he faces Nole then Rafa needs to win it for us to come out top.
If he faces Davy or Loppy and either of them beat him I think we'd still come out top.
It seems quite complicated and is based on percentage picks; Steven has made a more full explanation in the thread on am.com.

I suppose we shall have to watch this space!!!
Rafa will be tired - his match didn't finish until 11pm Shanghai time and his Semi starts at 8pm tomorrow evening.

Fed's just lost to Benneteau - only 4 of us had him to win (but I guess most of us have him getting to semis at least).

3 of us have Rafa and 6 Andy as winner.
